This is an outstanding research opportunity for an ambitious, dedicated graduate in a Computer Science or programming related discipline, to study for a fully funded PhD at a top UK University. Mentored throughout by top university brains and a leading Industry expert, you will research the role of non-volatile memory (NV-mem) in data intensive scientific workflows. This unique opportunity could be the launchpad to a stellar career for the right individual and comes with the additional benefit of a generous monthly living allowance.

Tasks

Non-volatile memories(NV-mem) can be used as both storage and as DRAM, but the usage model for both is not fully understood at present and few examples of such usage exist. You will investigate the technical and usability aspects of NV-mem and develop a framework that aims to optimise complex data-intensive scientific workflows for a variety of applications.

Core Skills

• Programming using Python or a similar language
• Scientific programming using C, C++ or Fortran
• Parallel programming using MPI and/or openMP or GPU programming using CUDA or OpenCL

Desired Skills

• An upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering degree or another technical degree with a strong programming component.
• Familiarity with High-Performance Computing (HPC) or a similar form of performance constrained scientific computation.
• Some familiarity with computer architecture and in particular computer memory systems
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.

The host company, a global leader in computing solutions are funding this research opportunity in collaboration with a UK University. Established over 40 years ago, they have provided high powered computer solutions to industry and research institutions throughout the world including Aerospace, Meteorological, Medical, Seismic as well as Governmental departments, where millions of data streams need processing simultaneously. Building on past successes they are researching more advanced ways of doing this.

• Candidates must satisfy the eligibility requirements of the work programme, namely be in the first four years of a technical career
• Must not have lived in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
• Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English
