Applicants are invited for a position of Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the project Development of sustainable, eco-friendly, and industrially scalable ultrasound assisted liquid phase exfoliation processing technologies for manufacturing two-dimensional advanced functional materials” (EcoUltra2D) in Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) at Brunel University London, U.K. The position, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The project will include the fundamental and applied studies on the mechanisms of ultrasonic exfoliation to produce graphene and other 2D materials, the optimisation of process parameters; and is aimed at the development of eco-friendly and scalable technology with minimising the use of harmful and aggressive reagents. Experiments with advanced characterization of cavitation parameters, most advanced in-situ and ex-situ analysis of exfoliated materials accompanied by modelling, and further testing their functional properties are in the focus of the project, and will be performed in collaboration with University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University and University of Hull. The project is supported by a number of industrial partners.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team working on applications of ultrasonic processing to a variety of materials. He/She will be specifically responsible for the choice, evaluation and optimisation of ultrasonic processing parameters; advanced characterisation of exfoliated 2D materials, as well as participate in in-situ studies of the exfoliation mechanisms under cavitation. This is a team project so the successful candidate will collaborate with researchers in participating institutions and interact with other researchers and engineers in BCAST.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent in materials science, physics, chemistry or another related scientific or engineering discipline, and should have a strong background in experimental research. Expertise in ultrasonic phenomena, processing of 2D materials, and advanced materials characterisation (SEM, TEM, AFM, synchrotron imaging, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, image analysis) is an important selection criterion. In addition, good communication skills, proficiency in written and spoken English (IELTS test certificate is required for nonEU candidates) as well as publication track record are required.

BCAST is a speciality research centre focusing on advanced liquid metal processing research with an international reputation in ultrasonic processing. BCAST prides itself on its innovation and creativity. Our activities cover fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Dmitry Eskin in BCAST (dmitry.eskin@brunel.ac.uk).

Closing date for applications:  25th August, 2018
