The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and the Department of Industrial Design and Production Engineering of the University of West Attica co-organize the Master of Science (MSc) Program “Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning”. Prospective students are invited to submit their applications for the new class commencing in Spring Semester 2023-24 (February 2024). The maximum number of admitted students for the academic year 2023-2024 for this 2nd call is set to 15 (fifteen). The MSc program is offered with tuition fees.

Studies are offered on a full-time basis and last three (3) academic semesters. Starting from this call (academic year 2023-24), the program is also offered on a part-time basis. The maximum length of studies, including the option for temporary suspension of the studies, is defined (a) by the relevant legislation, (b) by the current Regulation of Postgraduate Studies of this MSc (Government Gazette 1387/B/8-4-2021), and (c) by the modified Regulation of Postgraduate Studies, to take effect by end of January 2024.

In the full-time study mode, the first two academic semesters include lectures, while the 3rd academic semester is dedicated to the preparation, oral defense and successful evaluation of the MSc Thesis. In the part-time study mode, students must register in at least two (2) courses per semester. For each semester of part-time study, the maximum duration of studies is increased by 1 semester over the maximum duration of full-time study mode. Lectures, notes and any other educational material are given in English, with the possibility of extra notes translated in Greek. MSc Theses should be written in English.

Lectures and student assignments/project assessment are supported by synchronous distance learning.

Upon the successful completion of studies, students are awarded with the Master of Science degree in ‘’Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning’’. A total of ninety 90 credit units of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) are required for the successful completion of the program that leads to the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies. The degree is conferred following the successful examination in all courses according to the curriculum of the MSc program, including the completion, oral defense and successful evaluation of the MSc Thesis. At the 2 nd semester of studies, students have the option to select particular elective course that fall under two specialization areas: a) Autonomous Systems and b) Cognitive Systems. In case all electives of one specialization area are selected, the corresponding minor in the particular specialization is mentioned on the degree awarded; otherwise, the degree is conferred without specialization.

(i) Specialization in Autonomous Systems

It includes 3 elective courses focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and deep learning technics in the field of autonomous systems, and specifically:

1. Signal Processing, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning

2. Advanced Intelligent Control and Robotic systems

3. Autonomous Vehicles and Drones

(ii) Specialization in Cognitive Systems

It includes 3 elective courses focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and deep learning technics in the field of cognitive systems, and specifically:

1. Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning

2. Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare and Biometrics

3. Wearable and Affective Computing

Applicants should hold a degree from a Greek national or an accredited international Higher Educational Institution (HEI). Priority will be given to candidates holding a diploma in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or other Engineering faculty, or a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or other Sciences. Graduates of other disciplines may also be accepted following a per case evaluation. Supernumerary scholars and members of the categories of lab teaching staff are admitted, in accordance with provisions of Greek Law 4957/2022. In case of degrees given by a non-Greek HEI, the HEI should be included in the National Registry of Foreign Recognized Higher Education Institutes of the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center (Hellenic NARIC – DOATAP).

Application process and candidate selection criteria

A complete application should include the following documents:

1. The completed and signed application form

2. The candidate’s C.V.

3. A University degree (Level 6 of the EQF/NQF) and Transcripts

4. Scientific publications in journals or conference proceedings (if applicable)

5. Documentation on work experience or experience as a researcher (if applicable)

6. A valid ID (copy of both sides)

7. Two recommendation letters, sent directly to the Program Secretariat

8. Expression of interest (500 words maximum)

9. English language certification at the C1 Level of the CERF, or above2 .

These are the minimum documents required for the acceptance and evaluation of an application. Applications along with the necessary documents should have been submitted by the January 8, 2024, in digital format as a single PDF file, only through e-mail to the address: aidl@uniwa.gr. (In case the file size is large and cannot be attached to the e-mail, it may be split into two or more files and sent to the same e-mail address). The title of the MSc "Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning" must be mentioned in the ‘subject’ of the e-mail. Applications receive a reference protocol number which is sent back electronically to the applicants from the Secretariat of the MSc. Successful candidates will have to submit the supporting documents in paper form in order to complete their registration and enroll to the MSc Program, within the specific timeframe communicated by the Secretariat of the MSc.

Application evaluation and candidate selection procedures are completed in accordance with Greek Law 4957/2022 as it holds, and the MSc Program Regulation. The selection of the postgraduate students is based on the following:

1. evaluation and grading of the candidate’s application form and documents

2. personal interview of the candidate with the members of the Evaluation Committee.

All submitted documents are evaluated, and especially the following:

• Grade or mark of the Degree or Diploma of undergraduate studies
• Grade of Batchelor’s Thesis/Dissertation, (if applicable)
• A possible second University degree, undergraduate or graduate level
• Research activity
• Academic/Professional Publications
• Certified knowledge of any other language besides Greek and English
• Expression of interest letter.

Interviews are held by the Evaluation Committee of the MSc Program. The interview aims to assess:

• The profile of the candidate and his/her scientific competence in relation to the subject of the MSc Program
• The candidate’s motivation and interest in the program
• Undergraduate modules and grades relevant to the subjects taught in the MSc Program
• Relevant research activities
• The candidate’s communications skills.

Following the interview, each Evaluation Committee member gives an individual grade for the candidate; the final interview grade is the average of individual grades.

The final evaluation score of a candidate is calculated with equal weights of 50% each from:

• the grade of the applicant’s qualifications, as documented in the application file
• the grade of the interview.

The Evaluation Committee sorts applications according to the final evaluation score and prepares the list of successful candidates and runners-up. The list is submitted to the Administrative Committee of the MSc Program for approval before announcement. Successful candidates are then invited to register to the program. The evaluation and selection procedures are expected to be concluded by the end of January 2024.

Successful candidates need to register within the deadline announced by the MSc Secretariat in order to secure a place in the program. During registration, they have to submit all necessary registration documents along with the payment receipt of the first installment of the tuition fees (1 stsemester tuition fees). Students admitted to the MSc and exempted from the obligation to pay tuition fees in accordance with Greek Law 4957/2022 (article 418, par. 2 and article 86) as it holds, are not required to deposit the amount of tuition fees in order to secure a place in the admissions.

Tuition Fees

Post graduate students enrolled in the MSc are obliged to pay tuition fees. The amount of the required tuition fees for the whole program is set to 3,000 euros.

The option to pay the tuition fees in equal installments of 1,000 euro, is offered as follows:

1. The first installment is paid at registration,

2. The second and the third installments are split in two payments, one in the beginning and one by the end of the second and third semester, respectively, within deadlines announced from the MSc Secretariat.

For part-time studies, the tuition fees for each semester are set at 50% of the full-time program tuition fees.

The tuition fees are payable to the Special Account of Research Grants of UNIWA (https://elke.uniwa.gr), who is the financial administrating body for postgraduate studies. The account number and other details are provided by the MSc Secretariat.

The postgraduate students have to pay tuition fees regularly and according to scheduled times. Students cannot be reimbursed for unduly paid fees. Students are entitled to exemption from tuition fees and to full or partial scholarships on academic merit according to the provisions of the Postgraduate Studies Regulation and Greek Law 4957/2022 (article 418, par. 2 and article 86), as it holds.
