MASTER’S & PhD PROGRAMME PLACES BY THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

The University of Cyprus is accepting applications for the following postgraduate programmes for the Fall Semester of the academic year 2025/2026 with admission on September 2025.

1. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Thirty (30) places for the postgraduate programme leading to a Master's or a PhD degree are distributed as follows:

  • Total places Master Programmes: Twenty (20)
  • Total places PhD Programmes: Ten (10)

MSc in Biodiversity and Ecology

No. of places: Twenty (20) places in both MSc Programmes

Description / Information:
The M.Sc. in Biodiversity and Ecology entails theoretical coursework as well as a research dissertation, which can be laboratory-based or literature-based. Applicants who join this programme can choose between the two options until the end of the second semester of their studies.
Students opting for a laboratory-based research dissertation will need to secure a laboratory position by identifying a faculty member that would be prepared to supervise them for the laboratory component of their research work.

Notes/exceptions (if applicable):
The postgraduate programmes of the Department of Biological Sciences are offered only in the English language. Τhe applicant is required to have certification for “Very Good Knowledge” of English at level B2+.
Candidates who meet the necessary qualifications will be called for an interview.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Applications can be submitted ONLY electronically using the online application system of the University of Cyprus by May 16, 2025 at 12 noon. Applications submitted on paper will not be accepted.

The language of instruction for the above postgraduate programmes is Greek, except otherwise stated here.

REQUIRED SUPPORTING CERTIFICATES/DOCUMENTS

The online applications should include the following:

1. Curriculum Vitae.
2. Recognised University Degrees (Master’s and Bachelor’s level) or a certificate of expected graduation in the month preceding enrolment in the postgraduate programme. (In case of admission to a programme, certified copies of degrees must be submitted at the University no later than the acceptance date of the place).
3. University Transcripts as appropriate.
4. A short statement (max. two pages) of the student’s research goals and interests.
5. Letters of recommendation: The names and addresses of at least two (2) referees (University Professors) familiar with the candidate and his/her academic performance. In your application, you will only need to include the names and e-mail addresses of the evaluators. Reference letters are submitted electronically directly by the University Professors using the online application system. Please note that the Department may request additional confidential information. (Some departments require three (3) reference letters to be submitted with the application, so before submitting your application, please visit the web page of the department to verify the number of reference letters required).
6. Certificate of English language proficiency (if you are interested in studying in an Englishspeaking postgraduate programme or a programme requiring English language proficiency):
- In accordance with the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), for admission to postgraduate programmes taught in the English language, candidates should provide a certificate of their knowledge of English.
- For postgraduate programmes candidates are required to have a certification for “Very Good Knowledge” of English at level B2-C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) corresponds to the following specific reference frameworks for international examinations, according to the official pages of the organizations offering these examinations. Indicatively, a score of 5.5 – 6.5 corresponds to knowledge of level B2 (Lower), while score 8.5-9 is level C2 (Proficiency).
- Due to some scores only remaining valid for two years, if you apply using a certificate gained over two years ago, you will need to retake the test.
- Interested candidates coming from third countries can also take the Password Test (Password Skills Test Plus), ensuring an overall score of at least 5.5, in order to be granted a permit to enter the Republic of Cyprus (Decision 91.387/2021 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus, which enters into force on 01.12.2022).
7. Other certificates and verifications that they will help the evaluation committee to assess your application, such as employment verifications, etc.
8. FOR DOCTORAL APPLICATIONS: A preliminary research proposal for a PhD place (if this is stated in the department’s regulations).

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that their application has been successfully submitted. Upon successful submission, the candidate will receive an automatic confirmation from the system that his/her application has been successfully submitted.
