The School of Medicine - University of Crete, announce that applications for the academic year 2024-2025 for the Postgraduate Programme in "Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging" are now open. The Programme focuses on Forensic Medicine and more specifically on two of the most popular subspecialties, namely Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Imaging. More specifically, students will be offered basic knowledge in musculoskeletal and cross-sectional CT anatomy, will be introduced to the discipline of Forensic Medicine in terms of scope, methodology and legal framework and will be given specialized multidisciplinary training in the areas of Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Imaging.

The Programme leads to a Master’s Degree (MSc) in "Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging" after two (2) semesters of courses and the completion of an MSc dissertation in the third semester of studies.

The Programme also offers the opportunity of exiting with a specialization in Forensic Anthropology or Forensic Imaging.

The Programme is addressed to graduates with officially recognized undergraduate degrees in areas such as Medicine, Biology, Anatomy, Anthropology, Archaeology, Dentistry, Police Academy, Law and relevant subjects. Previous knowledge of anatomy, although welcomed, is not a prerequisite for entering the Programme.

Initiation and Duration of the Studies – Full Study

In the first two semesters, students take 3-5 mandatory and additional elective courses, summing over 30 ECTS. In the third semester the students are engaged in research and the completion of the MSc dissertation.

The Programme is full-time and the attendance is mandatory. The courses in Semester 1 and 2 require physical presence of the students. In Semester 3 the students may undertake a dissertation project in any of the departments and laboratories of the university of Crete or any other partner institution in Greece and abroad. The language of the courses and the language of the MSc Dissertation is English.

Up to thirty (30) graduate students will be selected every year.

In addition to the maximum number of admissions, up to two (2) candidates who have been awarded postgraduate scholarships by States, State Scholarship Foundations, International Organizations, International Programs, etc., may be admitted, as long as the admission criteria are met.

Modular Study

Interested parties who are not students of the Programme, are given the opportunity to participate – following their application to the Executive Committee of the Programme – in up to three modules of the Programme as attendees. The applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree (from Greek or Foreign Institutes) from Health Science Faculties (Anatomy, Medicine, Dentistry) or other relevant Faculties (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry) as well as graduates from Faculties relevant to the Programme’s scientific field, including Forensic Sciences, Anthropology, Archeology, Law, Nursing, Radiology, Police Academy etc. The selection of the applicants will be based on the same criteria as for the student candidates.

The attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance, not an MSc diploma, with the corresponding ECTS following the completion of their responsibilities for each module. The attendees will not be PG students and they will not have the rights and obligations deriving from the student status.

In the case attendees who have successfully completed one or more modules are later enrolled as students of the Programme, they have the right to transfer the acquired ECTS and receive a fee reduction accordingly, following the Executive Committee’s decision.

Submission of Documents

Applicants are invited to first create a user account at: https://postgrad.cict.uoc.gr and then to upload the following certificates or files:

  1. Certified copy of the BSc or MD degree Recognition by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Centre (DOATAP) is required for degrees that are awarded by foreign Higher Education Institutions. According to Law 4957/2022, the initial contact with DOATAP after a candidate applies for postgraduate studies is made by the Programme’s Secretariat.
  2. Transcript of Grades Τhe university degrees and the respective transcripts shall be written either in Greek (provided that they are issued by a Greek authority) or officially translated in English and certified by a competent authority.
  3. Proof of competence and fluency in the English language or alternatively a degree from a Higher Education Institution taught in English.
  4. A CV of the candidate, written in English, with information about his/her studies, the academic/professional experience, the scientific/social activities, as well as a list of publications and scientific work (if available)
  5. A Motivation Letter where the candidate explains the reasons and his/her motivation for applying to the Programme
  6. Two (2) letters of recommendation
  7. Proof of professional and/or research activity (if available)
  8. One recent passport-size photograph

For the Recommendation Letters

1. The recommendation letters must be submitted by their authors through the Programme’s electronic applications platform. The indicated authors of the recommendation letters will automatically receive a relevant invitation after the applicants' successful submission of his/her application. What shall be clearly stated in the application is:

a) the e-mail address of the institution to which the author belongs/works

b) the status and complete contact details of the author The recommendation letters must be submitted by June 7, 2024.

or 2. The recommendation letters can be sent by email, directly by the authors at: postgradsecr@med.uoc.gr with the subject: "Recommendation Letter for the applicant of the Postgraduate Programme in Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging, Mr./Mrs./Ms. ......................... ", by June 7, 2024.

Indicative Timetable

  1. Deadline for applications: June 7, 2024
  2. Interviews: between 10‐14 June, 2024. In case of a large number of applicants, interviews will also take place on a second date. The secretary of the Programme will send an email to the applicants with more information about the interviews.
  3. Announcement of the initial list of successful candidates and possible runners-up: by June 17, 2024
  4. Candidates have seven (7) days to appeal
  5. Announcement of successful applicants and possible runners-up: by June 24, 2024
  6. Registrations: September-October 2024
  7. Courses start: October 2024

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are set at 5.500 € (Euros) for the completion of the studies.
