As part of a major investment in the University of Glasgow Q-Step Centre, the College of Social Sciences is supporting a fully funded PhD Studentship to commence in January 2018. The Glasgow Q-Step Centre, one of 15 funded centres in the UK, embodies the commitment in the College of Social Sciences to developing the next generation of quantitatively trained leaders in social science research. In addition to developing their own research and professional skills, the PhD students will, as members of the Q-Step Centre at Glasgow, be involved with the development and delivery of innovative teaching in quantitative research methods.

The Q-Step Director Dr Jo Ferrie, is inviting PhD proposals from students wishing to pursue quantitative projects in three of Glasgow’s core strategic social science research themes: ‘Social Justice, Equity & Change’; ‘Social & Legislative Politics’; and ‘Methods, Data and Concepts in Social Science’.

Eligibility

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Politics, Sociology, Policy or a related Social Science cognate discipline. Knowledge and experience of quantitative methods of analysis and software tools for quantitative data analysis is highly desirable.

Home/EU and international applicants are eligible to apply as well as students already in their first year of a University of Glasgow PhD. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible.

The Award

The scholarship will run for a maximum of 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time commencing on January 2018 and will provide:

• an annual maintenance grant at the RCUK rate (2017/18 rate £14,510 full-time/£8,577.60 part-time)
• fees at the standard Home/EU or International rate
• a research support grant of £750 (£450 part-time) per annum

Research Proposal

Interested candidates should submit a research proposal (maximum 1,500 words, excluding tables and references) detailing the research question(s) to be addressed in the project as well as the theoretical justification, anticipated data sources (whether primary or secondary) and analytical approach and modelling strategies.

Academic Transcript(s)

Full academic transcript(s) from previous studies (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Two references

On official headed notepaper and signed by referees.

References given to candidates in sealed envelopes should be opened, scanned and attached to the email.

Selection Process

Applications will be ranked by a selection panel. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a video conference interview the week commencing 30^th October 2017. Successful applicants will be notified of the decision on their application by 19^th November 2017.

All scholarship awards are subject to candidates successfully securing admission to a PhD programme within the College of Social Sciences. Successful scholarship applicants will be invited to apply for admission to the relevant PhD programme after they are selected for funding.
