The School of Business and Economics is responsible for the subjects Business Administration and Economics at Linnaeus University. In these subjects, the business school offers education at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Education at the undergraduate level is mainly conducted within the school´s program portfolio, which contains program in marketing, tourism, entrepreneurship, international business, economics, retail, logistics, HRM, management etc.

Job description economics
The two PhD positions in economics and the thesis work will be conducted in close connection with the Linnaeus University Centre for Discrimination and Integration Studies (https://lnu.se/forskning/sok-forskning/linnaeus-university-centre-for-discrimination-and-integration-studies/) which is part of a long-run effort of Linnaeus University to promote exceptionally successful research environments. The centre is committed to excellence in research and the production of research with high national and international exposure. The centre has been quality-approved by special referee groups consisting of international experts in our field of research. Our researchers are active within the fields of Labor Economics, Discrimination, International Migration and Public Economics. Affiliated to the centre are not only economists, but also psychologists and political scientists.

The PhD program in economics follows a standard well-established structure that is common in Europe and North America. The program consists of 4 years of full time study where at least one year is entirely devoted to course work. The course curriculum includes courses in mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics and is offered in collaboration with a number of other universities in Sweden. The department covers all travel costs for students who participate in PhD courses at other universities. There is also the possibility to spend one or two semesters at a university abroad. We offer supervision of high international standard within our areas of expertise and a stimulating and intellectual work environment. The PhD education prepares our graduates for work within academia, qualified work within government organizations, as well as within the private sector. The department also helps prepare students who wish to participate in the international job market for PhD graduates in economics. City of placement is Växjö.

At least 80 % of the employment will be carried out in the form of independent work at the PhD level in accordance with a general and an individual study plan. It is expected that the PhD education should lead to a PhD degree or a ”Licentiate” degree. At most 20 % of the position is devoted to teaching and administration.

Requirements economics
General requirements 

  • a completed master’s degree
  • completed courses equaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or
  • equivalent qualifications obtained in some other way in Sweden or other country.

Specific requirements

  • a minimum of 90 higher education credits within the field of economics or subject fields related to third-cycle education in economics, or equivalent qualifications obtained in some other way in Sweden or other country.
  • demonstrate English skills of sufficiently high level

Assessment grounds economics
The candidates are assessed based on their perceived ability to successfully complete their doctoral studies. The assessment includes the candidates’ scientific skills through the quality of scientific work and grades in courses. Also, the degree of oral and written communication skills in as demonstrated e.g. in interviews and written communication.

Conditions of employment economics
The employment as a doctoral student is limited according to chapter 5, § 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent full-time postgraduate studies of four years.

Job description business administration
The PhD student in Business Administration is funded by scholarship with focus on family business in Småland. The position, funded by Henry and Silvia Tofts Foundation, comprises four years full-time studies and is located at Linnaeus University campus Växjö. The PhD student will be included in the knowledge platform "Entrepreneurship and Social Change", where entrepreneurship in rural areas, social entrepreneurship, and gender and ethnic issues belong to current focus areas.   • have very good ability to express themselves, both orally and written in Swedish

Assessment grounds business administration
The candidates are assessed based on their perceived ability to successfully complete their doctoral studies. In the assessment, include the candidates’ scientific skills through the quality of scientific work and grades in courses. Also, the degree of oral and written communication skills as demonstrated e.g. in interviews and written communication, especially in Swedish. The assessment also takes into account applicants' established dissertation plan specified at below of this advertisement.

Conditions of employment of business administration
No employment. The doctoral student studies in business administration are financed through the scholarships listed in the job description and refer to full-time postgraduate education for four years.
