This is a fixed term appointment for 2 years

The Hellenic Observatory, recently established as an LSE Research Centre, is launching a new programme of research on contemporary Greece and Cyprus, across the fields of politics, economy and society. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Research Officer (post-doc) for our ‘Economy & Public Policy’ research cluster. This role will significantly contribute to developing, planning and implementing research projects on regional growth, industrial diversification and the labour market. The successful candidate will be involved in all stages of research, from data collection and analysis to writing academic papers and policy digests. Additionally, they will support the wider research and KEI activities of the Centre, including by contributing to the development of research funding proposals in their field.

The Research Officer will work closely with Prof Monastiriotis on a project on ‘regional growth accelerations’ examining Greece comparatively within its European context, involving data management, research design and econometric research; and will also contribute to a series of projects on the Greek and Cypriot labour markets, on issues concerning brain drain and the demand for skills, sectoral-occupational shifts linked to the green transition and others, as directed by the Centre Director. The Research Officer will also be expected to contribute to the life of the Centre through participation to and active involvement in its research seminars, its discussion papers series, and various other public engagement and knowledge exchange activities.

Candidates should hold a PhD (or be near completion), in Economics or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have a solid working knowledge of applied micro-econometrics, including counterfactual methods for impact analysis, experience in data processing and large data management, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, good time-management skills, and experience in producing publications for internationally recognised journals. Experience in statistical software, including Stata and R, is required. Knowledge of contemporary Greece/ Cyprus and working knowledge of modern Greek is an advantage but not essential. Familiarity with regional economics and methods of spatial analysis is also an advantage.

The post-holder will be offered a research budget for conferences and related activities, as well as opportunities to participate in policy and research events in London, Greece/Cyprus, and elsewhere.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
